Twelve Days Without Medical Care: A Fight for Survival
In 2016, while serving time inside a detention facility, Kareem accidentally struck his head against a bottom bunk. The impact caused a subdural hematoma, a severe brain bleed that pooled blood between his brain and skull.
Despite suffering from excruciating physical trauma, Kareem's urgent requests for emergency care were repeatedly ignored by jail medical personnel. For twelve agonizing days, he remained confined without proper treatment while his condition steadily deteriorated.
It was only when Kareem's defense attorney successfully petitioned a judge for an emergency judicial order that medical personnel finally transferred him to a hospital. Upon his arrival at the emergency room, surgeons delivered a chilling reality; if he arrived four hours later, the internal pressure on his brain would have proved fatal.
Scars, Recovery, and the Drive for Change
Emergency cranial surgery saved Kareem’s life, but the ordeal left visible physical marks. In the video segment, Kareem openly displays the substantial surgical scars and missing portions of his skull resulting from the procedures required to relieve pressure on his brain and save his life.
